A semiconductor is a material that has conductive properties between a conductor and an insulator. Its conductivity is between conductors (such as copper, aluminum, etc.) and insulators (such as rubber, ceramics, etc.). The conductive properties of semiconductor materials can be adjusted by controlling temperature, applying electric field or doping.
The characteristics of semiconductor materials include:
Band Gap: Semiconductor materials have a band gap, that is, the energy gap between the valence band and the conduction band. This band gap determines the conductive properties of the semiconductor. In insulators, the band gap is large and there are almost no free electrons. In a conductor, the band gap is zero and there are plenty of free electrons. The band gap of semiconductors is typically in the 1 electron volt (eV) range.
Temperature sensitivity: The conductivity of a semiconductor varies with temperature. In general, the conductivity of semiconductors increases with increasing temperature.
Controllability: The conductive properties of semiconductor materials can be regulated by controlling applied electric fields, temperature, or doping. This makes the semiconductor controllable and adjustable in electronic devices.
Semiconductor materials are widely used in the manufacture of electronic devices and Integrated Circuits (ICs). Common semiconductor devices include diodes, transistors, field-effect transistors (FETs), integrated circuits, and so on. These devices play an important role in computer, communications, consumer electronics, optoelectronics, energy and other fields.
Common semiconductor materials include Silicon and Gallium Arsenide. Silicon is the most commonly used semiconductor material, because of its rich resources, mature manufacturing process and good electrical characteristics, widely used in the semiconductor industry. Gallium arsenide and other composite semiconductor materials play an important role in high-frequency electronic devices and optoelectronic devices.
